War Veterans Board Special Flight To Visit Memorials Built In Their Honor

A group of 20 veterans headed to San Antonio International Airport and boarded an honor flight, as the sounds of bag pipes filled the terminals.

They were embarking on the trip of the lifetime to thank them for their service.

The World War II, Korean War, and Vietnam veterans headed to Washington D.C. for the first time, to visit war memorials designated to them.

During their trip, they always visit Arlington National Cemetery, the World War II, Korea and Vietnam Memorials, as well as the Lincoln Memorial, Navy Memorial, Air Force Memorial, and Iwo Jima Memorial (Marine Corps War Memorial).

“It’s a once in a lifetime, I never would have dreamed to go to Washington,” Edward H. Cook, USN, Vietnam veteran, told KSAT 12.

The veterans range from 72 years of age all the way to 97 years old, and there are five Purple Heart recipients among them.

This opportunity is possible thanks to Honor Flight San Antonio, a nonprofit organization dedicated to honoring veterans for their sacrifices and saying ‘thank you’ by providing all expense paid trips to our nation’s capital to visit their memories.

Priority is given to any veteran with a terminal illness followed by World War II, Korea, and Vietnam.

After their special three-day trip, the veterans were greeted by a welcome home ceremony, which included the County Line Community Band and 81 airmen from Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland.
