Veteran Uses His Own Money to Help Those That Can’t Pay Their Utility Bills

Most of us know what it is like to be down on our luck. We may struggle to make ends meet and sometimes, we lose the battle. Probably more than just a few of us would also understand what it is like to have our utilities turned off because of it.

That is exactly what happened to veteran Michael Esmond. According to WEAR-TV, he lives in Gulf Breeze, Florida, and he had an experience like this back in the 80s. He wasn’t able to pay his gas bill at the time and it was disconnected.

According to WEAR-TV, he talked about how it was one of the coldest winters in history, and here he was, without any heat in his home. Since that time, he has run a successful company, Gulf Breeze Pools and Spas, and he has been able to stay on top of his bills since then.

Since that time, however, he has remembered those who are still struggling to pay the bills. That is why he decided to do something three years ago right before Christmas. He was going to give back.

The first year, he spent over $4000 paying past-due utility bills. He wanted to help his neighbors and dozens of people were able to thank him for that generosity.

Every family he helped received a Christmas card that explained that his company paid their bills. He also said that they could rest earlier that season because they had one less bill to pay.

Over the next couple of years, he continued to pay past-due utility bills for many families. This extended beyond the holiday season and other people wanted to get in on the act.

In 2001, he received a $104,000 check from a local peanut company. They wanted to thank him for the good that he did in helping others. Esmond turned around and used it to help other families.

According to the news outlet, he said: “I paid everybody’s past-due account for a while, about March to August, like six months straight. Nobody that had their utilities, Gulf Breeze utilities, had anything disconnected.”

When somebody is struggling, he steps in to help them in whatever way he possibly can. He has also received a lot of responses from thankful people that were able to get by due to the help he provided.

Esmond has not yet finished helping people and he still intends on paying the utility bills for others when the holiday season comes around. He hopes that more people will be inspired to pitch in.
