Smartphones have really taken over and it seems that everybody has their hands on one. While many people aren’t a fan of being connected 24/7, smartphones really can offer a lot of benefits.
A nurse in Sydney, Australia is demonstrating one of those benefits and it could be life-saving.
The nurse and medical student named Lauren goes by @studyvlogloz on TikTok, and shared a video plea on the app.
In her video, she explained just how important it is to have your Medical ID information up-to-date on your device at all times. She even shared a story of a time it could’ve made a huge difference in her own life!
Lauren explained in the video that she was waiting in line at a shopping center recently when a woman collapsed and hit her head. Being a nurse, Lauren “immediately went over to see if they needed any help.”
She said, “Having a duty of care and being comfortable doing basic life support, I was like alright I need to put my big girl pants on and step in…She was not in a good way at all…She was very close to being unresponsive.”
Not being sure what was happening with the woman, Lauren had the great idea to check her iPhone and see if she had notes on her Medical ID section of the phone. That information is available without unlocking the phone. Lauren explained, “I held the lock button and volume button together at the same time and swiped to her medical ID. She didn‘t have it updated but she did have her name, her birthday, her height, and her weight. Literally just because I had her name meant I was able to communicate better with her, and she was able to communicate by squeezing my hand a little bit better knowing I was talking to her.”
Lauren added that the woman had a cardiac condition that would’ve been good to know when assessing her during the emergency.
“I urge everyone to update theirs. And if you‘re not comfortable having your medical ID on your phone, what you can do is include an emergency contact which will allow someone on the scene to call them and find out what your history is and whether this has happened before,” Lauren said.
