A Baby Raccoon Met Her Human Mom After Being Found on a Construction Site
People often avoid raccoons, as they could be dangerous in close encounters. The nocturnal animal may also carry rabies, roundworms, and leptospirosis. Humans should be on guard and leave raccoons alone. Do not try to approach if not necessary, as it might feel threatened by your movements. They’re undoubtedly adorable, but it’s best to respect their space. Although wildly terrifying at times, raccoons can also be part of a human family. They can show their sweet personality to their humans, especially those with genuine care. Rescuers often welcome raccoons in their homes — a choice that they’ll never regret. Even those from the wild are capable of expressing affection.
Having a raccoon at home can fill your days with excitement and lots of learning about them. Jamie’s life is like that ever since Louie and Lucy became a part of her family. Louie was her first raccoon; then a rescue group contacted her to rehabilitate Lucy. “They were building construction in a neighborhood, and she was left behind,” Jamie shared. “They were building homes, and Lucy’s family, I don’t know what happened to them, but she somehow got left behind, someone found her and brought Lucy to a rescue group.” They knew that Lucy would be well taken care of with Jamie’s experience as a vet tech and rehabilitating Louie. But Jamie was still nervous about Lucy because she was as small as a hamster. Nevertheless, she pursued and nurtured the baby raccoon. Lucy was fed every two to three hours and received nebulizer treatments for her breathing issues.
Jamie instantly became a raccoon mom — she had a baby with a huge appetite which caused her sleepless nights. Apart from that, Lucy also has regular vet checkups included in her care routine. “It was a very big commitment, not only financially but also time-consuming. I just stopped doing everything and gave her the care that she needed,” Jamie said. Every effort is worth it with Lucy, especially because she strives to survive. She’s a strong young raccoon, but Jamie admitted that Lucy still lacks in certain areas. For instance, Lucy has yet to learn how to climb well, which is an important raccoon thing. But there’s always room for improvement, and with sufficient practice, she’ll be able to climb any tree that comes her way.
There are a lot of things that Jamie shared about Lucy, and one of those is her bond with Louie. Regardless of the differences in personalities, the two get along well with each other. And although Louie is superior in size, Lucy’s sassy attitude always wins in the end. It’s like a typical sibling relationship that makes the bond even more adorable. Lucy has really found a family in Jamie’s home, and she won’t be going anywhere yet. Jamie needs to ensure that she’ll be able to survive in the wild.
