But do you know how to carve a pumpkin?

I know, I know it gets messy. You might think it is supposed to be messy, but guess what? This grandma’s got you covered.

Meet Babs, everyone’s grandmother, and she shares her wisdom on TikTok with her 2.6 million followers. And with Halloween coming, so too is their family’s treasured tradition of carving jack-o-lanterns.

Just last week, she shared the most helpful trick for carving a pumpkin, and everyone’s loving her for it. It’s less of a mess, and it also saves time. For those rushing with the Halloween decorations, you might want to check this out.

Babs posted a minute-long video showcasing how she is able to carve a pumpkin without the usual mess and she captions it with the “🎃Do’s and Don’ts of Pumpkin Carving 🎃”.

It’s the 7 simple tips of pumpkin carving by grandma Babs!

1. Carve from the bottom.

Most people I see carve pumpkins do it from the top. But carving from the bottom makes it so that you have the stem to hold onto and you can easily slip the pumpkin right over a candle or flashlight.

2. Hold the pumpkin in your lap to carve.

Again, most people do this on their counters or table. Hold the pumpkin in your lap and you will have a much steadier pumpkin to cut.

3. Use a hand mixer to clean out your pumpkin.

Hands-on no more! Cleaning out a pumpkin with your bare hands is icky and bits and pieces may even get in between your nails. So Babs recommends using a hand mixer for a cleaner experience and then using a spoon to scoop out all the pumpkin flesh.

4. Use a red dry-erase marker to sketch your design.

Black and orange are the colors of Halloween, so it may feel natural to use a black marker when you’re sketching out your pumpkin design. And black markers are also more commonly used wherever, but sketching using a red erasable marker is recommended since it can be removed easily and blends in if you ever miss a spot.

5. Use cookie cutters to carve.

Use your cutters and punch them in with a rubber mallet to carve your design. No more struggling to saw your design with a small knife and risk cutting your hands. There are a variety of cookie cutters available and using these will save you so much time!

6. Cover all cut surfaces with Vaseline.

Who wants to see a rotting pumpkin? Well, I suppose a rotting pumpkin can add to the spooks, but your beautifully carved pumpkin deserves to remain fresh as long as possible. To keep them moist after carving, cover them up with petroleum jelly. Pumpkins should last 1-2 weeks when carved!

7. Sprinkle some cinnamon.

For an extra, deliciously aromatic step, use cinnamon and sprinkle it on the inside top of your pumpkin! This is for that festive pumpkin spice smell when a candle is lit inside the pumpkin.
