Over A Dozen Critically Injured & Neglected Shelter Pets Are Getting The Care They Need Thanks To Paws In Peril Care-A-Thon

We asked for your help to treat and care for shelter pets in need of emergency medical care, and you stepped up in a big way!

October is National Pet Wellness Month and we decided to celebrate with our first Paws in Peril Care-A-Thon.

The goal of the week-long campaign was to fund the care of thirteen shelter dogs and cats who needed everything from emergency surgery to extended medical care. Thanks to your generous support, we raised over $75,000 for pets in need of medical care.

You helped save lives and gave the following pets the second chance they deserve. They send their thanks in the form of kisses and soft purrs.

Chance

He was the runt of the litter and arrived at the shelter in need of an emergency blood transfusion. He received the life-saving treatment he needed and is thriving. He is in a loving foster home and able to run and play with his litter mates. His future looks bright.

Brisko

The 2-year-old homeless dog was hit by a car and every step he took was painful. He needed two surgeries to repair his front leg that was broken in two spots. He is on the road to recovery and will soon be able to walk, play, and run without pain.

Seraphim

The pit bull puppy was found by a group of concerned citizens in Kentucky missing all of her fur and with deep cuts on her head and neck. She arrived with demodectic mange and suffering from internal parasites, fleas, and poor nutrition. She has been started on pain medication and treated for parasites. She continues to improve and despite all she has been through remains a sweet, trusting, and loving puppy.

Emaciated Kittens

The litter of emaciated kittens were found in locked crates in a remote field in Texas. It was a hot day, and the little felines didn’t have access to food or water. The estimated 6-week-old kittens have multiple ailments to overcome from the abuse they endured including malnourishment, dehydration, flea infestation and internal parasites. They have also tested positive for Feline Panleukopenia Virus, which can have a 90% fatality rate without supportive care. They are slowly improving and on the road to recovery.

Jade

Elmbrook Humane Society took her in and immediately noticed she had an “odd gait” in both of her back legs. She was examined by a vet who confirmed that she has Cranial cruciate ligament (CCL) rupture, torn ligament in the knee, in both hind legs.

CCL tears are incredibly painful, but Jade hasn’t let the pain affect her sweet and friendly personality. She has a loving family who is fostering her through her recovery and plans to adopt her.

Francis

Francis was rescued off the streets when a bystander saw teenagers throwing rocks at the poor pup. It was obvious to the volunteers who rescued him that every step Francis took was painful. He was examined by a veterinarian who discovered that the sweet boy was suffering from severe damage to the joints in his hind leg and would need surgery as soon as possible.

He has received the necessary surgery and is now starting his recovery which will include physical therapy and weeks of ongoing care.

Junie

The 6-month-old poodle mix was found unresponsive and in critical condition abandoned in a field. She was rescued just in time and arrived at Second Chance Rescue NYC Dogs emaciated with infected wounds and acid burns covering her tiny body from color dye spread across her fur coat. She was immediately started on pain meds and a nutritious diet. She is expected to make a full recovery.

Leo

When Leo’s owner went to jail, the young pup was left alone with no one to care for him. After his paw got caught in a snare, poor Leo was found by a neighbor who quickly brought him in to the shelter. He is undergoing surgery to try and save his paw.

Then this sweet boy will need several months of care and physical therapy as he rehabilitates with a foster family. Once he’s finally healed, he’s sure to find his forever home with a family who will love him unconditionally.

Winky

Winky was rescued from a cat colony at four weeks old in desperate need of medical attention. She was suffering from a severe upper respiratory infection, as well as dehydration and malnutrition, and her eye was infected beyond saving. Her infected eye has been removed and she is adjusting well.

Shelter staff will monitor her recovery and ensure she’s fully vaccinated, dewormed and spayed before sending her off into a loving, forever home.

Arthur

Arthur was found abandoned one morning outside a shelter in Texas. He was lying next to a tree, dehydrated and covered with fleas. Poor Arthur’s femur was broken. He received the emergency surgery to save his leg and will now need months of care and physical therapy as he rehabilitates with a medical foster.

Domino

Domino was found limping around a Philadelphia suburb and brought to the shelter by a good Samaritan. Along with being dehydrated and emaciated, poor Domino’s eyes were infected, and his leg shattered in several places. His leg couldn’t be saved and was amputated. He is doing well as a tripod and will live a full life.

Pecan

Pecan is a deaf and partially blind special needs puppy who has spent most of his life in a shelter. He recently developed an upper respiratory infection that turned into pneumonia. He will spend some time in an oxygen chamber to help him breathe, along with following a balanced diet. Pecan is the sweetest boy, full of puppy love and kisses.

Mercury

Mercury was hit by a car and suffered a dislocated hip and the top layers of skin and tissue on his rear legs were scraped away. He is receiving all the care he needs and will soon have surgery to repair his hip. The shelter shared, “Mercury is a very sweet cat who purrs when you talk to him and loves attention. Once his legs heal sufficiently, he will most certainly make someone a great pet and companion.”
