German Boy Missing For 8 Days Found Alive In The Sewer

An 8-year-old boy that went missing in Germany has been found alive in the sewer system after 8 days.

According to NBC News, the boy, identified as Joe, went missing from his front yard in Oldenburg, Germany on June 17.

His parents initiated a search that turned into a huge operation, but one day slowly turned into two, then three, then four, and there were no signs of Joe anywhere.

After a week had passed, police received a tip that there were sounds coming from beneath the road. After lifting a manhole cover to investigate the noise, police discovered Joe in the sewer below.

NBC News reports that the boy was “completely undressed” and suffering from hypothermia and dehydration, but was otherwise ok. Officials believe he climbed into a drain while playing and got lost in the system, eventually ending up in the sewer.

The police stated:

“After evaluating all traces and clues, the officers now assume that Joe crawled through a drain into the rainwater sewer system on the day of his disappearance and lost his orientation after several meters. The police have ruled out third-party negligence at this point in time.”

Initially, Joe’s disappearance was being looked at as a potential homicide or kidnapping after rumors spread about him being sighted with a strange man. However, those rumors proved to be false and it seems his disappearance was merely an accident.

Joe is currently in the hospital and is expected to make a full recovery.
