According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, California boasts some 840 miles of coastline, while Maine has just 228 miles of coastline. So if that’s true, how, exactly, does Maine have a longer coastline?

Well, the general coastline doesn’t include inlets or bays. When factoring those in to get a total tidal coastline, Maine boasts a staggering 3,478 miles of coast!
