Russell happened to be filming when the whales breached and his daughter, Sarah, was shocked by what she saw and looked into the camera with her mouth open in surprise.

The whales reportedly jumped into the air several times and created massive splashes in the distance.

In an interview with Global News, Russell said: “It’s not uncommon to have whales around the boat. The whales are usually around and eating there, too.”

According to Newfoundland and Labrador, “the world’s largest population of humpback whales return each year to feed on capelin, krill, and squid along the coast.”

According to CBC, Sean and Sarah Russell went out in Conception Bay early in the morning to fish. It turns out the humpback whales in the area were also looking for something to eat.

At first, the whales were “quietly doing their own thing” but their behavior changed and they swam up to the boat to put on a show!
