He Thought She Was a Micro Pig, But He Ended Up with a 600-Pound Behemoth

Pets come in all different shapes and sizes. Most of us tend to think about dogs and cats, but there can be some exotic pets as well, including pigs.

Steve Jenkins was a realtor, and he didn’t start out to do something amazing, but life had something else in store for him. He had rescued a mini pig, or what he thought was a mini pig, and named her Esther.

As this little pig became a bigger part of his life, she also became bigger. It wasn’t long before she was gaining 1 pound a day, and, within a couple of years, she was over 600 pounds.

Esther Is Full Of Personality

Esther is an absolutely wonderful addition to the family. She is described as being ‘mischievous and manipulative,’ and he says she makes him laugh every day.

She loves baked goods, such as donuts and cupcakes (who doesn’t?), and it is both hilarious and heartwarming to watch Esther chowing down.

Since he had rescued Esther from a commercial farm, Steve thought a lot about what her life would’ve been like if she had stayed. He thought about the way that animals were treated and what they are used for.

Prior to the time that he started thinking this way, Steve wasn’t a vegan, but he considers Esther to be an eye-opening experience. After she was brought into his life, he began to think about the importance of animals and how every animal deserves to live.

Starting a New Life

That is when he decided to open a farm sanctuary. It took 60 days to raise $440,000 and they opened Happily Ever Esther Farm Sanctuary.

That sanctuary has now been open for nine years, and they have saved many animals during that time.

You never know what’s going to happen when you bring an animal into your home. For Steve, it was the defining moment that led him down a path he will follow for the rest of his life.
