Georgia Police Officer Rescues Injured Owl “Owen” From Middle of Road

Police officers are always on the lookout for those in trouble, including animals.

Sgt. West with the Milton Police Department was driving along Highway 9 on the evening of December 22nd when he spotted a barred owl in the middle of the road.

“He was able to turn around and rescue Owen before any further harm could become of him. Fortunately, Officer Fannon was on duty and has some experience with these animals! After meeting with Sgt. West, it was determined that Owen was likely hit by a car,” the department shared on Facebook.

The comment section was flooded with praise for the officers. “Milton PD has the best officers who care about all their citizens even the ones with feathers. Thank you Sgt West and Officer Fannon,” wrote one supporter.

Another recognized the owl and said, “YES!! I’ve seen him several times both day and night!! He’s huge!! And lives in this Hwy 9 area!! Thank you for saving him!”

Owen was transported to Veterinary Emergency Group to be cared for overnight. The next day he was taken to Hawk Talk Inc., a wildlife rehabilitation group in North Georgia who has experience with birds of prey. They updated those following Owen’s recovery with good news that he did not any broken bones.

He spent a week recovering and then was ready to be released back into the wild. The officers arrived to help send him on his way. Curious children can be seen in the video shared by Hawk Talk Inc. gently petting Owen and learning that the reason his feathers are so soft is so that he can fly without making a sound.
