This video is a compilation of all of the events, deployments, and visits that the USS George H.W. Bush undertook and held over the last year. She and her crew accomplished a lot and worked alongside several other nations’ navies during the past year. You can get a sense of what that includes and involves in the video.
The George H.W. Bush is 1,092 feet in length and displaces over 100,000 tons, which makes her one of the largest warships in the world. Her top speed is greater than 30 knots, powered by two nuclear reactors, and she can operate for more than 20 years without refueling. She is the second carrier to have a modernized island, which includes a new radar tower (enclosed to reduce radar signature). She also has navigation system upgrades, enhanced communication systems, and armored windows. The island is smaller and has been repositioned further aft to improve flight deck access.
You will see some video of every element of the ship’s operations in this video, including her flight deck, which is designed with new features like an updated aviation fuel storage and distribution system and semi-automated refueling and servicing with new deck locations to provide faster, more efficient aircraft pit stops, which require fewer crew. The aircraft launch systems are improved and modernized as well.
The George H.W. Bush (CVN-77) was commissioned on 10 January 2009, and her homeport is Norfolk, VA. Her motto is “Freedom at Work,” and her nickname is “Avenger.” She carries a complement of 3,532 in the ship’s company and 2,480 in her airwing. She can conduct electronic warfare and deploy decoys and is armed with two Mk 29 ESSM launchers, two RIM-116 Rolling Airframe missiles, and three Phalanx CIWS. Her air wing includes 90 fixed-wing planes and helicopters.
In August of 2022, the George H.W. Bush embarked with Carrier Air Wing 7 and began a deployment as part of Carrier Strike Group 10. On August 25th, 2022, she and Carrier Strike Group 10 transited the Strait of Gibraltar and entered the Mediterranean Sea.
You will see in the video some of the training exercises she undertook and the regular day-to-day operations that the George H.W. Bush participated in during the last year. You’ll also get a sense of what the crew accomplished and the places they visited. During that time, she held a change-of-command ceremony, had some shore leave in fantastic cities, celebrated Thanksgiving and Christmas, did training exercises with the Spanish and French Navies, and participated in a NATO event.
The George H.W. Bush is incredible in its dimensions, its capabilities, and its value to the United States Navy. We send our respect and our thanks to the officers and crews, both in the ship’s company and in the Air Wing. You are the embodiment of your motto, you are “Freedom at Work!”Whizzco
