Limping Shelter Dog Needs Your Help To Walk Again Without Pain

A 3.5-year-old Catahoula Leopard Dog mix named Jade was rescued from an overcrowded shelter in Alabama and flown to Wisconsin for a second chance at finding a forever home on a Greater Good Charities Good Flight.

Elmbrook Humane Society took her in and immediately noticed she had an “odd gait” in both of her back legs. She was examined by a vet who confirmed that she has Cranial cruciate ligament (CCL) rupture, torn ligament in the knee, in both hind legs.

The young dog would need costly surgery to regain mobility and live a normal life. The shelter reached out to Greater Good Charities’ Emergency Animal Medical Care fund for help. The fund gives grants to animal shelters and rescues to cover the cost of emergency surgeries and ongoing treatments for shelter pets.

CCL tears are incredibly painful, but Jade hasn’t let the pain affect her sweet and friendly personality. Her left leg is worse than her right and will be operated on first. In addition to the expensive surgeries, she will need weeks of therapy and be on joint supplements for life.

Every step she takes is painful.

The shelter shared with us, “Jade’s prognosis is very good. She should be able to lead a normal life after both of her legs have healed. Recovery will take Jade a total of 24 weeks. If we did not do these surgeries for Jade, I am extremely confident that adoption for her would be very difficult. Most people would not be able to take on a dog that needs almost $7,000 in surgery right away.”
