A 9-year-old boy in New Zealand unearthed a monstrous earthworm right in his backyard!
According to 9News Australia, Barnaby Domigan was playing in his yard when he spotted the unusually large worm on the ground.
Barnaby’s mom, Jo, shared a photo of the worm on Facebook, saying: “GUYS!! This is an ACTUAL WORM Barnaby found in OUR backyard today!!!! Is this newsworthy!?! I think it’s newsworthy.”
We’d have to agree with her. Check out the picture below:

Speaking with Stuff.com, Barnaby said, “I thought [the worm] was massive, and amazing, and a little bit disgusting.” He said he grabbed it with a stick and thought it was a worm but wasn’t 100% sure.
His mom called it “the stuff of nightmares,” but said Barnaby was delighted by it. In the end, they left the worm in the garden to go free, but they weren’t sure if it was dead or alive.
The worm was so impressive it inspired a New Zealand artist to write a whole children’s song about it!

While a 3-foot-long earthworm may sound like something from the fictitious series Dune, giant earthworms do exist in the scope of reality.
In fact, some earthworms, like the Giant Gippsland Earthworm, exceed one meter in length according to SWIFFT.
According to the Encyclopedia of New Zealand, the country is home to 171 species of native earthworms and 23 non-native species. The longest of the species in New Zeleand is the Spenceriella gigantea, which grow to 1.3 metres (over 3 feet).Whizzco
