Boston Residents Can Now Enjoy Free Community College Regardless of Income or Immigration Status

A newly expanded tuition program will allow Boston residents to enjoy free community college, regardless of income or immigration status.

According to Bunker Hill Community College, the Tuition-Free Community College Plan pays for up to three years of tuition and fees for those who are pursuing an associate degree or short-term certificate program from a participating college.

Beyond covering tuition expenses, the program also offers $250 each semester for up to three years for college-related expenses (such as books or transportation).

According to WBUR, the city’s mayor, Michelle Wu, said that the program is possible thanks to a $4 million federal investment. She said: “Every Boston resident who wants to earn the skills and knowledge to give back to our communities and build a life here should be able to do so.”

CBS Boston reports that 1,000 students have taken advantage of the city’s Tuition-Free Community College Plan since 2016.

The recent expansion of the program should allow even more Boston residents to receive free education!
