Artist Transforms Melon Into Real-Life “Devil Fruit” From Popular Anime Show

Fan art is pretty cool. If you’re part of a fandom you’ve probably seen some creative fans come up with sketches or other artistic works inspired by their favorite books, movies, or TV shows. If you’re a fan of the popular anime and manga pirate series, One Piece, then you’re probably familiar with the Devil Fruit.

In the show’s world, there are a collection of special fruits which gives its eaters permanent superhuman powers. However, there is a catch: Whoever eats them is left with the permanent inability to swim.

However, amongst fans, that doesn’t mean that the Devil Fruit wouldn’t be a cool thing to have in real life. And one fan of the show, a Japanese high school student named Etoo, took it upon themselves to create their very own fruit variety. Of course, there are no superpowers involved, but it didn’t make it any less impressive.

Etoo tweeted their work, which was a real life replica of the Gum Gum Fruit, also known as Luffy’s Gomu Gomu no Mi. In the show, this particular fruit can turn someone into a Rubber Human as it gives their body rubber properties.

But the amazing work of Etoo was created by carving up a melon. Etoo really managed to capture the intricate pattern of the Gum Gum Fruit by carving it into the melon’s rind. They revealed that they managed to do this by scraping into the melon when it was still small, thus allowing the pattern to stretch as the melon grew – quite clever!

Etoo’s tweet went viral, and because of all the attention the Gum Gum Fruit was receiving, Etoo announced that they were going to start working on another Devil Fruit – the Mera Mera no Mi, which allows the eater the power to create, control, and transform fire.
