15 Golden Retriever Puppies Abandoned in Ohio Field with their Moms Will Need Homes
According to a recent news account out of Ohio, 17 golden retrievers — 15 of them puppies — were rounded up by the Mercer County dog warden after they were discovered abandoned in a field. Not long after delivering them to the local pound, the Animal Protection League of Mercer County (APLMC) swooped in to rescue them. All 17 animals had been dumped in the country.
A volunteer group, the APLMC, in conjunction with Celina Pet Center, is trying to find them homes where they’ll never have to worry about being given the proverbial boot again. How anyone does this is beyond the scope of our imagination, yet here we are. News Center 7′s John Bedell spoke to the folks working to care for the dogs before they can find their forever homes.
To start with, the two groups believe the puppies — who vary in color from blond to red — are from three different litters based on the hue of their coats and ages, and they say the pups are anywhere from 3 to 6 months old.
“It’s a little heartbreaking, mainly because most of these dogs have not been touched, held, or handled. They’re scared,” Katie Moore of APLMC stated.
Fortunately, the two animal welfare organizations share a parking lot. “They help us get them bathed and they get their vet work done while here. And then we transition them into foster care,” Moore explained.
The dog warden told News Center 7 that he has an open investigation into who dumped the canines on the evening of June 26, but so far there are no leads. Moore noted that the next step is for the dogs to get fostered and eventually adopted. One has to wonder if the animals were part of a puppy mill setup, but there’s still no word on that.
As to the mama dogs, they are being called Katy & Kassidy, and both are already available for adoption. Of the puppies, there are four boys and 11 girls. The APLMC website says that the blond puppies are going into foster situations for now because they need extra care for the moment. The 11 red puppies are almost ready for adoption, and they have foster homes lined up to assist in socialization while they wait.
They do ask that “Before you apply to adopt one of these goldens, please consider the time it’ll take to socialize and work with them. They are scared and will need time to learn to trust.”
They also point out that they haven’t set adoption fees yet because the animals’ vet work is currently being performed and they don’t know what the total is.
